Four of Pentacles Tarot Card Meaning: Upright & Reversed
Keywords, Symbols, Colors, Astrology, Love, Timing & Yes or No
A crowned man sits on a low stone seat with a city at his back, one pentacle hugged tight against his chest. Another balances on top of his crown, and two more sit pinned beneath his feet.
Most people pull this card in a season when they’re gripping something hard enough to leave marks.
Welcome to the thirty-eighth entry in my tarot glossary, and the sixteenth card of the Minor Arcana.
Fours bring structure: four walls, four corners, four legs under a table. Pentacles builds that structure out of money, work, and the body, which is where this card learns how tight a grip can get.
Below you’ll find the card’s symbols, its color psychology, upright plus reversed meanings with keyword lists, what it means in love or as feelings, how other cards amplify or diminish it, its element, its astrology, timing, whether it leans yes or no, and my own intuitive read after years of pulling it for clients.
Keep going for the question I ask anyone who lands this card with their shoulders up around their ears.

What Does The Four of Pentacles Tarot Card Actually Mean?
The Four of Pentacles is white-knuckling your way through a chapter.
Saving and security are the usual words. My own read leans on the grip itself, because the coins in this card are less a fortune than a set of handholds.
Nothing here is reckless. Every pentacle is accounted for, pressed into place, guarded from all four sides.
A fortune held at arm’s length
In the Rider Waite Smith image, a crowned figure sits outside a city, one coin clutched to his chest, one on his crown, two trapped beneath his boots.
Notice where he’s sitting.
Behind him stand the walls and rooftops of a town, plus all the shelter it offers. He has chosen the open ground instead, holding his wealth while sitting completely exposed.
The suit grew out of the coins of the older Latin decks, where it always carried trade, value, and what the material world asks of you.
Rachel Pollack’s 78 Degrees of Wisdom reads this figure as someone who has built a structure around himself, one that protects him and keeps everything else out at the same time.
What Are the Symbols on The Four of Pentacles Tarot Card?
Every symbol in this card is a form of holding.
Pamela Colman Smith placed each coin where the body guards it most, and nothing sits loose.
- The coin at his chest: security pulled close to the heart, where letting go would hurt the most.
- The coin on his crown: thoughts stuck on money, worth and status, balanced so carefully he can’t turn his head.
- The coins under his feet: a foundation pinned down so firmly that walking anywhere becomes impossible.
- The crown: authority over his own resources, earned and fiercely defended.
- The stone seat: a fixed position, a set of rules he refuses to move from.
- The city behind him: community, comfort and shelter, all available and all behind his back.
- The red robe: desire, will and survival instinct wrapped around the whole figure.
- The dark cloak: privacy, secrecy, the parts of himself kept covered.
- The number four: structure, four corners, the steadiness that becomes stiffness when nothing is allowed to shift.
What Do the Colors on The Four of Pentacles Tarot Card Mean in Psychology?
Color reaches you long before any keyword does.
Studies have linked particular hues to particular moods for decades, and this palette is the most guarded in the suit.
THE FOUR OF PENTACLES COLOR PALETTE
Each color is pulled from the card itself, with what it tends to stir in you.
Coin gold seen in all four pentacles
Value, plus the fear of losing it.
Robe red seen across his body
Survival energy. Red tends to raise alertness in most color psychology studies, which suits a man who never quite relaxes.
Cloak black seen over his shoulders
Protection that doubles as concealment.
City grey seen in the town behind him
Shelter he has turned his back on.
Sky ash seen in the flat sky overhead
A mood with no weather in it, neither storm nor sun.
Ground stone seen beneath his seat
Solid footing that has quietly become a fixed position.
↑ UPRIGHT
What Does The Four of Pentacles Tarot Card Mean Upright?
Upright, the Four of Pentacles is security held as tightly as two hands allow.
Pennies get pinched. Budgets get checked twice, and every dollar coming in gets measured against every dollar going out.
Some of that is wisdom. Living well within your means is a skill, and this card often shows up for people who have mastered it.
Control on the outside, quiet on the inside
What I see underneath the saving is a need for control.
Arranging the outer world very precisely can be a way of calming an inner world that feels anything but calm. Ledgers, routines, locked doors, and plans for every outcome all do that job for a while.
Exposure is still the truth of it. He holds every coin, yet he’s sitting outside the walls with nothing over his head.
Most upright Four of Pentacles keyword lists land on saving money, security, conservatism, scarcity, and control.
My own reading adds the white knuckles, since nearly everyone who draws this card is bracing for something.
The Four of Pentacles upright at a glance
- Core meaning: stability secured by holding on, sometimes harder than the situation needs.
- Relationships: loyalty with a protective streak, or a partner who struggles to share control.
- Career and finances: careful saving, a tight budget, watching income against expenses with real discipline.
- Health: tension in the chest, hands and jaw, plus routines held rigidly. Read it as symbolism rather than diagnosis.
- Spiritual: trust being withheld, from life, from guidance, from the idea that enough will keep arriving.

How Do Other Cards Amplify or Diminish The Four of Pentacles?
No card reads alone. In every spread, the cards beside the Four of Pentacles either steady its grip or show you what that grip is costing.
This is called adjacency: two or more cards working in unison, building one cohesive story instead of a list of single card definitions.
When the Four of Pentacles gets amplified
An amplifier gives the holding a healthy reason. Structure with a future attached, saving with a purpose.
+Four of Pentacles + Ten of Pentacles
discipline now becomes a home, an inheritance, or a family safety net later.
+Four of Pentacles + The Emperor
boundaries and budgets that protect people instead of isolating them.
+Four of Pentacles + Queen of Pentacles
security that includes rest, good food, and a body that feels looked after.
When the Four of Pentacles gets diminished
A diminishing card shows the grip turning on its owner. Fear dressed as prudence, rules dressed as safety.
−Four of Pentacles + Five of Pentacles
scarcity thinking that keeps you cold even with money in the bank.
−Four of Pentacles + The Devil
possessiveness over people or things, with control mistaken for love.
−Four of Pentacles + Eight of Swords
self-imposed limits that feel like walls and work like a trap.
When two cards disagree, don’t pick a winner. Acknowledging the disagreement is the reading.

Is The Four of Pentacles a Yes or No Card?
Yes to keeping what you have, no to anything that asks you to loosen your grip.
The Four of Pentacles favours caution. Questions about saving, protecting, or staying put tend to lean its way.
Anything involving risk, generosity, or a leap gets a slower answer.
Joan Bunning’s reading of this card as possessiveness and blocked change fits how it behaves in a yes or no spread: it holds, it rarely releases.
Reversed, the answer softens toward yes, since the grip is already starting to open.
In a live reading I steer clear of flat yes or no answers, since your free will does the real work and no card gets to choose for you.
This card simply shows you how tightly you’re holding while you decide.
What Is The Four of Pentacles’ Timing in a Tarot Reading?
Timing under the Four of Pentacles is slow and guarded.
Progress happens, though only at the pace your sense of safety allows. Nothing moves until it has been checked, counted, and approved.
Four is the number clue, pointing to four days, four weeks, or four months.
Counted, careful, unhurried
Sun in Capricorn places the card in the third decan of Capricorn, roughly the tenth to the nineteenth of January.
Mid January suits it. Holiday spending is over, bills are arriving, and plenty of people sit down to look hard at what’s coming in versus going out.
When this card turns up for timing, I ask what has to feel secure before someone will let anything change.
That answer usually sets the real schedule.
What Element and Astrology Rule The Four of Pentacles?
The Four of Pentacles is Sun in Capricorn, which makes a great deal of sense the moment you look at him.
Capricorn builds, plans, and endures. The Sun puts the self at the centre of all that effort, so the identity and the holdings start to blur together.
Earth is the element, and here it’s earth packed down hard, the kind you could build on and could never plant in.
Each numbered Pentacles card holds a decan, a ten-degree slice of an earth sign, and this one closes out Capricorn.
Accountants, caretakers, first-generation earners, anyone who grew up without much, plus everyone who has ever checked their bank balance before getting out of bed, all live under this light.
Worth saying clearly that the Sun is not greed in this placement. Much of the time it’s a person who has finally built something and is terrified of losing it.
What Does The Four of Pentacles Mean in Love, as Feelings, and as a Person?
The Four of Pentacles loves loyally and carefully, sometimes too carefully to let anyone all the way in.
Here’s how it tends to read in the questions people ask most.
- In love, if you’re single: a guarded heart, high standards, or a reluctance to risk what you’ve rebuilt.
- In love, in a relationship: stability and commitment, sometimes with jealousy or a need to control how things go.
- As feelings: somebody holding on tightly, protective of you or of themselves. Strong feeling, little flow.
- As a person: dependable, practical, financially careful, often with Capricorn energy and a fear of chaos.
- As advice: keep the security, loosen the grip. Love needs both hands open now and then.
- Reversed in love: letting someone in at last, or possessiveness spilling out where everyone can see it.
What Does the Four of Pentacles Actually Feel Like?
Here’s the part no keyword list covers, learned from pulling this card for clients rather than from a book.
White-knuckling is the phrase I keep coming back to. This card arrives when somebody is getting through a chapter by holding on as hard as they can.
I’ve seen it during seasons of pinching pennies, living well within the budget, watching income against expenses line by line. Plenty of that is smart, and some of it is survival.
Control is the other thing I see. When the inner world feels unsafe, organising the outer one becomes a way to quiet it, and the habit can start to feel almost compulsive.
Look again at where he sits, though. All that holding, and he is still outside the walls with nothing overhead, exposed and vulnerable in a way the coins can’t fix.
Psychologists have a name for part of this, the illusion of control, our habit of overestimating how much of life our grip actually decides.
If control has started running you rather than serving you, a therapist is a good person to bring into the room alongside this work.
Where to loosen and where to steady
This card asks two questions at once.
Where can you stop holding on so tightly? A rule you could relax, a fear you could name, a coin you could finally spend on rest or joy.
Where does something deserve steadying? Income, savings, a safety net, plus the emotional grounding that lets you trust tomorrow a little more.
Both answers matter. Security built on fear stays fragile, and security built on grounding lets you open your hands without losing anything that counts.
↓ REVERSED
What Does The Four of Pentacles Tarot Card Mean Reversed?
Reversed, the coins start to slip.
One version is release, a person choosing to loosen their hold and finding they’re still safe.
The other is overcorrection, money or control swinging the opposite way, spent fast to feel free of the fear.
The grip opening
Relief often arrives first in this version, with nerves close behind.
Generosity returns, a budget relaxes, or someone finally shares what they’d been guarding.
When this card reverses in a spread, I ask whether the letting go was chosen or forced, since the reading changes completely depending on the answer.
The common reading of the Four of Pentacles reversed covers generosity, giving, spending, openness, financial insecurity, and reckless spending.
The Four of Pentacles reversed at a glance
- Core meaning: control loosening, wisely or all at once.
- Relationships: trust returning, or possessiveness finally out in the open.
- Career and finances: spending more freely, a financial wobble, or a rigid plan being rewritten.
- Health: tension easing, or a sign to look at stress around money with support. Symbolic, never diagnostic.
- Spiritual: learning that safety can come from trust rather than from grip.
REVERSED KEYWORDS
letting go generosity overspending financial insecurity openness loss of control release trust
CARDS THAT SHARPEN THE WARNING
- The Tower takes the control away instead of waiting for you to hand it over.
- Seven of Cups spends on fantasies rather than on what lasts.
- Nine of Swords keeps the money worry awake at three in the morning.
CARDS THAT SOFTEN IT
- Six of Pentacles turns the loosening into fair, healthy giving.
- Temperance finds the middle ground between hoarding and spending.
- Ace of Pentacles offers a fresh, steadier start once the grip relaxes.
“It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor.”
