Five of Pentacles Tarot Card Meaning: Upright & Reversed

Keywords, Symbols, Colors, Astrology, Love, Timing & Yes or No

Two figures in ragged clothes push through falling snow at night. One leans on crutches, the other wraps a thin shawl tight, and behind them a stained glass window glows with five pentacles they don’t seem to notice.

Most people meet this card in the season when everything feels colder than it should.

Welcome to the forty-second entry in my tarot glossary, and the twentieth card of the Minor Arcana.

Every Five is a pattern disruption. Pentacles carries that disruption into the body, the bank account, and the home, which is why this one tends to feel so physical.

Below you’ll find the card’s symbols, its color psychology, upright plus reversed meanings with keyword lists, what it means in love or as feelings, how other cards amplify or diminish it, its element, its astrology, timing, whether it leans yes or no, and my own intuitive read after years of pulling it for clients.

Stay to the end for why I read this winter card as one of the most romantic in the tarot deck.

NEVER HAD A READING WITH ME BEFORE?

The Five of Pentacles is two people walking through the snow together, which is the deck’s way of saying hardship is real and nobody has to carry it alone.

What Does The Five of Pentacles Tarot Card Actually Mean?

The Five of Pentacles is your own personal winter.

Money runs short, the body aches, a door you counted on closes. Whatever the shape, it lands somewhere you can feel it.

Hardship is the word most readers start with, and it fits. My own read adds something people don’t expect, which is that this card is about who walks beside you through it.

Cold outside, light in the window

In the Rider Waite Smith image, two ragged figures cross a snowy street at night, one on crutches, beneath a lit church window holding five pentacles.

Notice that nobody inside the window is looking out at them.

Neither of them is looking up, either. Shelter sits a few steps away, and the cold has narrowed their attention to the next footprint.

The suit traces back to the suit of coins in the older Latin decks, which always carried money, labour, and the material weight of a life.

Rachel Pollack’s 78 Degrees of Wisdom reads this card as a time when spiritual help is close by and simply goes unnoticed, which is very close to how I see it.

What Are the Symbols on The Five of Pentacles Tarot Card?

Every detail here weighs comfort against cold.

Pamela Colman Smith put warmth and hardship on the same street, a few feet apart.

  • The falling snow: a winter season of life, harder than it should be and temporary all the same.
  • The figure on crutches: the body carrying strain, and the spot where my eyes go when a health question is in the room.
  • The small bell at his neck: someone marked as an outsider, announcing himself before anyone has to look.
  • The thin shawl: making do with what you have, holding it tighter than it can hold you.
  • Bare feet in the snow: exposure, nothing between the person and the ground.
  • The lit stained glass window: warmth, community, and help, all of it closer than it looks.
  • The five pentacles in the glass: resources that exist, arranged where they can be reached.
  • The two figures together: companionship in the cold, the quiet heart of the card.
  • The number five: disruption, the hard middle of the suit that every journey passes through.

What Do the Colors on The Five of Pentacles Tarot Card Mean in Psychology?

Color does its work on you before a single meaning gets read.

Researchers have long tied specific hues to specific responses, and this palette is the coldest in the suit, broken by one warm window.

THE FIVE OF PENTACLES COLOR PALETTE

Each color is pulled from the card itself, with what it tends to stir in you.

Night black seen in the sky above them

The weight of a season when the light leaves early.

Snow white seen across the ground

Cold that numbs, and a blank surface waiting for the next step.

Window gold seen in the stained glass

Warmth and optimism. Yellow tends to lift mood in most color psychology research, which is why the eye goes to it first.

Glass red seen in the window’s panes

Life force kept behind glass, waiting to be let in.

Shawl grey seen wrapped around her

Getting by, quietly, without asking anyone for anything.

Crutch brown seen in the wooden crutches

Support, worn down from use and still holding.

↑ UPRIGHT

Five of Pentacles tarot card meaning upright, two figures in the snow beneath a lit window, from The Tarot MediumWhat Does The Five of Pentacles Tarot Card Mean Upright?

Upright, the Five of Pentacles is a hard season you are walking through right now.

Physical hardship sits at the centre of it. Money, health, housing, or belonging has taken a hit, and the cold is real.

What it doesn’t say is that you’re stubborn, or that you did this to yourself.

Left out in the cold

This card always carries the feeling of being on the outside of something.

A family, a workplace, a friend group, a version of life you used to live inside. The window is lit and you’re on the street.

Hardship can convince you that you have to get through it alone, as if suffering in private is the only way to learn the lesson for good.

Most upright Five of Pentacles keyword lists settle on financial loss, poverty, a lack mindset, isolation, and worry.

My own reading adds the second figure, because the person beside you in the snow changes the whole card.

The Five of Pentacles upright at a glance

  • Core meaning: a winter season of hardship, with help and company closer than they feel.
  • Relationships: two people holding on through a rough patch, or someone feeling shut out of a circle.
  • Career and finances: money stretched thin, a job lost or wobbling, a budget that has to change.
  • Health: the body asking for care, sometimes a physical ailment showing up in the reading. Symbolic, never diagnostic, so bring it to a doctor.
  • Spiritual: feeling unsupported while support is quietly lit in the window.

CARDS THAT STRENGTHEN IT

  • Six of Pentacles opens the door and hands over what’s needed.
  • Three of Cups brings the people back around the table.
  • The Star promises the thaw after the longest night.

CARDS THAT DIMINISH IT

  • Four of Pentacles grips what’s left and refuses any offer.
  • The Hermit walks further from the window, by choice.
  • Nine of Swords turns the cold into sleepless worry.

“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.”
Albert Camus

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant.”
Anne Bradstreet

How Do Other Cards Amplify or Diminish The Five of Pentacles?

No card reads alone. In every spread, the neighbouring cards either bring the Five of Pentacles in from the cold or leave it standing in the snow.

This is called adjacency: two or more cards working in unison, building one cohesive story instead of a list of single card definitions.

When the Five of Pentacles gets amplified

An amplifier here answers the knock. Help arrives, a circle opens, the season starts to turn.

+Five of Pentacles + Six of Pentacles

someone offers support, and the work is letting yourself accept it.

+Five of Pentacles + Three of Cups

a new community forms, often with people who have walked through the same snow.

+Five of Pentacles + The Star

recovery after a long winter, slow and real.

When the Five of Pentacles gets diminished

A diminishing card keeps the door shut. It isolates, clutches, or loops the worry until morning.

−Five of Pentacles + Four of Pentacles

holding every coin so tightly that nobody can help with the load.

−Five of Pentacles + The Hermit

withdrawal dressed up as independence, when company is what’s needed.

−Five of Pentacles + Nine of Swords

the money or health worry keeping you up at night, bigger in the dark than in daylight.

When two cards disagree, don’t pick a winner. Acknowledging the disagreement is the reading.

Is The Five of Pentacles a Yes or No Card?

Not yet, though the help you’d need for a yes is closer than it looks.

The Five of Pentacles describes a stretch of hardship, which rarely makes for a quick green light.

Its real instruction is to ask for support before deciding anything big.

Joan Bunning reads the Five of Pentacles as hard times, ill health, and rejection, which explains why most readers lean toward no here.

Reversed, it tilts toward yes, since the reversal usually marks the thaw.

In a live reading I steer away from flat yes or no answers anyway, since your free will does the real work and no card gets to choose on your behalf.

This card simply asks you not to walk the next part alone.

What Is The Five of Pentacles’ Timing in a Tarot Reading?

Timing under the Five of Pentacles is a season rather than a date.

Winters end on their own schedule. Small, consistent steps are what move you through it faster than waiting does.

Five is the number clue, showing up as five days, five weeks, or five months once the turn begins.

A thaw that comes in increments

Mercury in Taurus places the card in the first decan of Taurus, roughly the twentieth to the twenty-ninth of April.

Strange, at first, for a winter card to live in spring. I read it as a reminder that the thaw is already scheduled.

When I see this card for timing, I ask what one small step could happen this week.

The answer is usually a phone call, an email, or a single payment, which is where the season starts to change.

What Element and Astrology Rule The Five of Pentacles?

The Five of Pentacles is Mercury in Taurus, the mind worrying over what the body and the bank account can hold.

Taurus wants security, comfort, and enough. Mercury counts, calculates, and talks. Put them together and you get someone running the numbers again and again at the kitchen table.

Earth is the element, and here it’s earth frozen hard, the ground under bare feet in January.

Each numbered Pentacles card takes a decan, a ten-degree slice of an earth sign, and this one holds the opening third of Taurus.

Anyone rebuilding after a layoff, a diagnosis, a divorce, or an estrangement knows this light, plus everyone who has ever budgeted a week down to the last coin.

Mercury helps here, too. It’s the planet of messages, which is exactly what asking for help is.

What Does The Five of Pentacles Mean in Love, as Feelings, and as a Person?

The Five of Pentacles is a hard-times card that often reads tender in love, because of who’s walking beside you.

Here’s how it tends to read in the questions people ask most.

  • In love, if you’re single: feeling on the outside of love right now, and a reminder that companionship can arrive through hardship.
  • In love, in a relationship: two people getting through a rough season together, or one partner feeling shut out.
  • As feelings: they feel insecure, stretched, or not good enough right now, and they’re still showing up.
  • As a person: someone going through a lean or painful stretch, proud, resilient, slow to ask for anything.
  • As advice: reach out. Asking for help is how the door opens.
  • Reversed in love: the relationship coming in from the cold, or a reconciliation after a hard season apart.

What Does the Five of Pentacles Actually Feel Like?

Here’s the part no keyword list covers, learned from pulling this card for clients rather than from a book.

Physical hardship is real with this card. Sometimes my eyes land on the figure on crutches and the reading turns toward the body, toward a physical ailment that needs care. Symbolic, never diagnostic, and always worth bringing to a doctor.

Otherwise, and this surprises people, I see this card as somewhat romantic. Hear me out.

Comfort is available if you reach out and ask for it. The card doesn’t say you’re stubborn. It says you’re cold, and that warmth is a few steps away.

Hardship can convince you that you have to go it alone to learn from it and never repeat it. That isn’t always the case.

The romance is the companionship. Two people realising they might be all they have in the world, and deciding that’s enough, even while they feel shut out of everything else.

I’ve watched this play out with a client who could no longer be part of the family they were born into. They felt this card all the way down, and they were hoping for some sort of community.

I told them it’s there. It might not be what fulfils them right now, and it’s there all the same.

Researchers link social isolation to real harm in the body and the mind, which is one reason this card asks you not to stay out in the snow.

Ask for help, always

The key with this card is that you can always ask for help. Always.

That’s where a greater sense of stability comes from. Pentacles are emotionally grounding as well as financial, and both kinds of ground get firmer when someone else helps you stand on them.

When this card shows up as a money card, it’s calling you to live well within your means. Cancel the subscriptions you’ve stopped using, then draw up a list of who you owe, what, where, and why.

Start paying it off incrementally, even if it’s twenty-five cents at a time. Small, dedicated, consistent acts grow, and that’s how you move through this.

My suggestions here stay general rather than financial advice, so a credit counsellor is a good next call if the list feels too heavy to carry alone.

↓ REVERSED

Five of Pentacles reversed tarot card meaning, two travellers finally stepping in from the cold, from The Tarot MediumWhat Does The Five of Pentacles Tarot Card Mean Reversed?

Reversed, the snow starts to ease and someone finally knocks on the door.

One version is recovery: income returning, health improving, a circle opening back up.

The other is the moment you accept help after refusing it, which can feel harder than the winter itself.

Coming back inside

Relief arrives slowly in this version, step by step.

Debts shrink, a diagnosis gets a plan, an estrangement softens, or a new community lets you in.

When this card reverses in a spread, I ask who has already offered help that hasn’t been taken yet.

The standard reading of the Five of Pentacles reversed frames it as positive change, recovery from loss, overcoming adversity, forgiveness, and feeling welcomed.

The Five of Pentacles reversed at a glance

  • Core meaning: the hard season ending, usually through help that’s finally accepted.
  • Relationships: reconciliation, a welcome back, or someone choosing to stay through the cold.
  • Career and finances: money stabilising, a job found, debt shrinking one payment at a time.
  • Health: recovery beginning, or care finally being sought. Symbolic, never diagnostic.
  • Spiritual: noticing the lit window, and walking toward it.

REVERSED KEYWORDS

recovery accepting help the thaw feeling welcomed forgiveness rebuilding lingering isolation pride

CARDS THAT SHARPEN THE WARNING

  • Ten of Wands keeps you carrying everything rather than accepting a hand.
  • Five of Cups holds your gaze on what was lost instead of what’s offered.
  • The Tower brings one more storm before the thaw.

CARDS THAT SOFTEN IT

  • Ace of Pentacles plants a fresh, solid start.
  • Queen of Pentacles offers warmth, food, and a seat by the fire.
  • Temperance sets a recovery pace you can keep.
