Four of Wands Tarot Card Meaning: Upright & Reversed
Keywords, Symbols, Colors, Astrology, Love, Timing & Yes or No
Four staves stand planted in the ground with a garland of flowers and fruit strung across the top. Two figures raise bouquets in front of them, while a castle and a gathering crowd fill the distance under a golden sky.
Most people meet this card when something in their life finally deserves a party.
Welcome to the thirty-sixth entry in my tarot glossary, and the fourteenth card of the Minor Arcana.
Fours bring stability, the point where something wobbling finds four corners to stand on. Wands runs that through passion and drive, which turns the steadiness into something you can dance on.
Below you’ll find the card’s symbols, its color psychology, upright plus reversed meanings with keyword lists, what it means in love or as feelings, how other cards amplify or diminish it, its element, its astrology, timing, whether it leans yes or no, and my own intuitive read after years of pulling it for clients.
Stay to the end for the summer evening that taught me exactly what this card feels like.

What Does The Four of Wands Tarot Card Actually Mean?
The Four of Wands is what home looks like when it’s working, and what it feels like when you walk in.
Celebration is the headline. Underneath it sits stability of your passions, because four wands driven into the ground don’t move when the music starts.
Weddings, housewarmings, reunions, a milestone finally reached: any of them can stand behind this card. What they share is a moment where effort pauses long enough for people to gather around it.
Four corners and a garland
In the Rider Waite Smith image, four tall staves hold a garland above two figures who lift flowers into the air, with a castle rising behind them.
Nobody in this picture is working.
The structure is finished, the garland is hung, and the people who built it are finally allowed to enjoy it. A crowd near the castle suggests the celebration spills well past the two in front.
The suit grows out of the batons and clubs of the older European decks, where it came to stand for energy, enterprise and the fire that gets things built.
Rachel Pollack’s 78 Degrees of Wisdom reads this card as a simple joy in being alive, and I’d add that it’s joy with somewhere to land.
What Are the Symbols on The Four of Wands Tarot Card?
Every detail here points toward arrival rather than effort.
Pamela Colman Smith painted this as the moment after the work, and each element says so.
- The four wands: passions planted deep enough to hold weight, a frame you can build a life inside.
- The garland: flowers and fruit strung across the top, the harvest of whatever those wands were reaching for.
- The two figures with bouquets: joy expressed out loud, arms up, nothing held back.
- The castle: security behind the celebration, a home base solid enough to leave and return to.
- The crowd in the distance: community, the people who show up when something worth marking happens.
- The golden sky: warmth across the whole scene, an atmosphere rather than a single bright spot.
- The open ground: no walls around the party. Everyone is welcome to walk in.
- The bridge near the castle: a crossing completed, the journey from the Threes arriving somewhere.
- The number four: stability, structure, four walls and a roof over your fire.
What Do the Colors on The Four of Wands Tarot Card Mean in Psychology?
Color reaches you before any meaning gets a chance to.
Researchers have long linked particular hues to particular moods, and this palette is the warmest welcome in the suit.
THE FOUR OF WANDS COLOR PALETTE
Each color is pulled from the card itself, with what it tends to stir in you.
Sky gold seen across the whole sky
Optimism you can stand inside. Yellow tends to read as cheerful in most color psychology research, and here it covers everything.
Garland green seen in the leaves strung overhead
Growth that has settled into abundance.
Robe red seen on one of the dancers
Passion worn openly, with nothing to prove.
Robe blue seen on the second figure
Calm beside the excitement, the person who makes a party feel safe.
Castle grey seen in the walls behind
Security quietly holding the whole scene up.
Wand wood seen in all four staves
Roots, effort and the plain material every good memory gets built from.

What Does The Four of Wands Tarot Card Mean Upright?
Upright, the Four of Wands is a milestone you get to mark with the people who helped you reach it.
Something has been built, settled, or finally made official. Now comes the part where you let it be enjoyed.
Events cluster around this card: parties, ceremonies, homecomings, the first dinner in a new place.
The party at the end of the effort
Plenty of readers stop at celebration, which is fair, though I read a little more into the foundation.
Four wands in the ground means your passions have found stable footing. The joy lasts because the structure under it is real.
Depending on what sits nearby, I’ve also seen this card point to event coordination, the person planning the gathering rather than attending it.
Most upright Four of Wands keyword lists settle on celebration, joy, harmony, relaxation and homecoming.
My own reading adds chosen family, since the people around this card are rarely there out of obligation.

CARDS THAT STRENGTHEN IT
- Two of Cups turns the gathering into a commitment worth witnessing.
- Three of Cups fills the guest list with people who mean it.
- The Sun brings the celebration outdoors and into full light.
CARDS THAT DIMINISH IT
- Five of Wands brings an argument to the party.
- Five of Pentacles leaves someone standing outside in the cold.
- Eight of Cups walks away before the toast.
“Home is where one starts from.”
T. S. Eliot, East Coker“Where we love is home, home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.
How Do Other Cards Amplify or Diminish The Four of Wands?
No card reads alone. In every spread, the neighbouring cards either raise the Four of Wands into a full occasion or quietly empty the room.
This is called adjacency: two or more cards working in unison, building one cohesive story instead of a list of single card definitions.
When the Four of Wands gets amplified
An amplifier here adds people, purpose or light. The celebration gets a reason, a guest list, or a summer sky.
+Four of Wands + Two of Cups
an engagement, a wedding, or a commitment marked in front of the people who matter most.
+Four of Wands + Three of Cups
community rallies, friends arrive, and the gathering becomes bigger than anyone planned.
+Four of Wands + The Sun
a joyful season, often summer, with the celebration held out in the open.
When the Four of Wands gets diminished
A diminishing card unsettles the foundation. It brings friction, absence, or a quiet exit through the side door.
−Four of Wands + Five of Wands
too many opinions on how the event should go, with the planning louder than the party.
−Four of Wands + Five of Pentacles
someone feels left out of the circle, or money pressure hangs over the occasion.
−Four of Wands + Eight of Cups
a home or community outgrown, with someone ready to leave even while the garland is still up.
When two cards disagree, don’t pick a winner. Acknowledging the disagreement is the reading.

Is The Four of Wands a Yes or No Card?
The Four of Wands leans toward yes, and a sociable one.
Few cards in the tarot deck feel this settled. Whatever is being asked about tends to have solid ground under it.
Readers who see this card as driven people building something lasting together tend to read the yes as a shared one.
Reversed, the answer softens toward not yet, usually because the home front needs settling before anything gets added to it.
In a live reading I steer away from flat yes or no answers anyway, since your free will does the real work and no card gets to choose on your behalf.
What this card does offer is a good sign about the people you’d be doing it with.
What Is The Four of Wands’ Timing in a Tarot Reading?
Timing under the Four of Wands lands at a marker: a date on the calendar, an anniversary, a scheduled event.
Things arrive once the foundation is in. The card rarely rushes, though it also rarely keeps you waiting long after the work is done.
Four is the number clue, showing up as four days, four weeks, or four months.
Mid April and the long table
Venus in Aries places this card in the third decan of Aries, roughly the eleventh to the twentieth of April.
Spring suits it, with gardens waking and the first outdoor gatherings of the year getting planned.
Summer is where I’ve watched it show up most in real life, though. Weddings, long dinners, doors left open late into the evening.
If this card comes up for timing, I look for the next occasion already on someone’s calendar.
What Element and Astrology Rule The Four of Wands?
The Four of Wands is Venus in Aries, which pairs the planet of love and pleasure with the sign that starts everything.
Venus wants beauty, harmony and connection. Aries wants to move first and loudly, which is how a quiet dinner becomes a party.
Fire is the element, here contained by four sturdy wands rather than spreading wild.
Traditional astrology calls Venus uncomfortable in Aries, and the card shows why it works anyway: the passion gets a frame, plus a garland hung across it.
Each numbered Wands card takes a decan, a ten-degree slice of a fire sign, and this one closes out Aries.
Hosts, planners, newlyweds, anybody who measures a good year in the people they gathered, all live under this light.
What Does The Four of Wands Mean in Love, as Feelings, and as a Person?
The Four of Wands is among the happiest cards for love in the tarot deck, especially when the people around you get involved.
Here’s how it tends to read in the questions people ask most.
- In love, if you’re single: meeting someone through community, at an event, or among friends who already know you well.
- In love, in a relationship: moving in, getting engaged, a wedding, or a commitment your people get to celebrate. Beside the Two of Cups, this is often the card of a ceremony.
- As feelings: happy, settled and proud of you. Somebody sees a home when they look at this connection.
- As a person: warm, welcoming, the natural host, often with Aries energy and a full calendar.
- As advice: bring the relationship into your circle. Love grows sturdier when it’s witnessed.
- Reversed in love: tension at home, family disapproval, or a celebration postponed until things feel steadier.
What Does the Four of Wands Actually Feel Like?
Here’s the part no keyword list covers, learned from my own life as much as from client readings.
One summer, my husband and I travelled for a friend’s wedding and stayed at an Airbnb. The people hosting us didn’t just hand over a key.
They welcomed us into their home and shared dinner with us, two strangers at their table on a warm evening. It was lovely, beautiful, completely unplanned.
Sitting at that table, I remember thinking, this is a Four of Wands experience.
That’s the card in one moment. Home is less about a building than about the feeling of being welcomed inside one, and hospitality is one of the oldest ways humans have of showing it.
Celebration, community, stability of your passions: all of it was sitting at that table.
Gather the people who count
When this card lands, it’s a call to come together.
Let your family, your chosen family and your friends commemorate something with you. Milestones get lighter to carry and brighter to remember when other people help hold them.
Sometimes the reading points to event coordination instead, so look at the neighbouring cards before assuming you’re a guest. You might be the one hanging the garland.
Either way, the invitation is the same. Make room at the table, and let yourself be celebrated too.
↓ REVERSED
What Does The Four of Wands Tarot Card Mean Reversed?
Reversed, the garland sags and the foundation feels less certain.
One version is home in transition: a move, a renovation, a family reshuffling who lives where.
The other is a celebration delayed, downsized, or overshadowed by tension among the people meant to enjoy it.
The house between chapters
Unsettled is the word that comes up most in this position.
Something about belonging feels uncertain, whether that’s a physical home, a friend group, or a sense of welcome.
When this card reverses in a spread, I ask where the person feels most at ease right now, since the answer often isn’t the place they live.
The standard reading of the Four of Wands reversed covers a lack of support, instability, feeling unwelcome, transience and conflict at home.
The Four of Wands reversed at a glance
- Core meaning: stability wobbling, or a milestone not yet ready to be marked.
- Relationships: family friction, a wedding or move postponed, or a partner not feeling at home.
- Career and finances: a launch delayed, a team without cohesion, or an event that needs more planning.
- Health: stress tied to home life or isolation, worth naming to someone you trust. Symbolic, never diagnostic.
- Spiritual: searching for where you belong, sometimes by finding your people all over again.

CARDS THAT SHARPEN THE WARNING
- The Tower shakes the house itself, at speed.

- Six of Cups brings back old friends and the comfort of familiar faces.

- Ten of Cups promises the family finds its rhythm again.
