Six of Pentacles Tarot Card Meaning: Upright & Reversed
Keywords, Symbols, Colors, Astrology, Love, Timing & Yes or No
A merchant in a red cloak holds a set of balanced scales in one hand. With the other he drops coins into the open palm of a kneeling figure, while a second figure kneels beside them, waiting his turn.
This card tends to arrive when the question underneath everything is who owes what to whom.
Welcome to the forty-sixth entry in my tarot glossary, and the twenty-fourth card of the Minor Arcana.
Every Six is the calm after the storm. The Fives broke the pattern, and Pentacles carries the recovery into money, time, and care, which is why this card is so often about who gives and who receives.
Below you’ll find the card’s symbols, its color psychology, upright plus reversed meanings with keyword lists, what it means in love or as feelings, how other cards amplify or diminish it, its element, its astrology, timing, whether it leans yes or no, and my own intuitive read after years of pulling it for clients.
Stay to the end for why this card took me longer to understand than almost any other in the tarot deck.

The Six of Pentacles is a merchant weighing out coins on a balanced scale, which is the deck’s way of asking whether what you give and what you receive still match.

What Does The Six of Pentacles Tarot Card Actually Mean?
The Six of Pentacles is balance, generosity, and the search for equilibrium.
Somebody has something to give, and somebody needs to receive it. The card asks whether that flow is healthy, fair, and moving in both directions.
Charity is the keyword most readers start with. My own read lands on reciprocity, the give and take that keeps any relationship standing.
Two hands, one scale
In the Rider Waite Smith image, a well dressed merchant holds level scales while dropping coins to one kneeling figure, with a second figure waiting beside him.
Look at the scales first.
They hang perfectly even, though the people below them don’t. One man stands, two kneel, and the card quietly asks how long anyone can live with that arrangement.
The suit grows out of the suit of coins in the older Latin decks, which always held money, trade, and the practical exchanges of daily life.
Rachel Pollack’s 78 Degrees of Wisdom points out that the giver is also the one in charge, which is why this card always carries a question about power alongside the generosity.
What Are the Symbols on The Six of Pentacles Tarot Card?
Every detail here measures what flows from one hand to another.
Pamela Colman Smith built this card around a single transaction, frozen at the moment the coins fall.
- The merchant: someone with enough to share, plus the responsibility that comes with it.
- The balanced scales: fairness, judgement, and the hope that giving stays in proportion.
- The falling coins: resources in motion: money, time, energy, attention.
- The open hand below: receiving, which takes its own kind of courage.
- The second kneeling figure: whoever is still waiting, and the question of who gets helped next.
- The red cloak: means, confidence, and the visible comfort of the one giving.
- The six pentacles above: resources that exist beyond any single person in the picture.
- The town in the distance: community, the wider world all of this exchange belongs to.
- The number six: harmony after disruption, the calm that follows the storm of the Fives.
What Do the Colors on The Six of Pentacles Tarot Card Mean in Psychology?
Color does its work on you before a single meaning gets read.
Researchers have long tied specific hues to specific responses, and this palette sets warm wealth against cool humility.
THE SIX OF PENTACLES COLOR PALETTE
Each color is pulled from the card itself, with what it tends to stir in you.
Robe red seen in the merchant’s cloak
Means and motion, the confidence of someone with enough to share.
Coin gold seen in the falling coins
Value changing hands. Yellow reads as warm and hopeful in most color psychology research, which suits a card about giving.
Sky grey seen behind the figures
Neutral ground, where the exchange is meant to stay even.
Cloak blue seen on the kneeling figure
Humility and calm, the quiet courage it takes to hold out a hand.
Earth brown seen in the ground they kneel on
Basic needs, the solid floor everybody shares.
Parchment cream seen in the clear space above
Room for gratitude on both sides of the scale.

What Does The Six of Pentacles Tarot Card Mean Upright?
Upright, the Six of Pentacles is an exchange that’s working.
Help is offered, help is received, and the scales stay roughly level. Generosity flows without anyone keeping a ledger.
It often shows up after a hard season, as the support that finally arrives.
Giving, receiving, and the space between
This card can put you on either side of the transaction.
Sometimes you’re the merchant, the one with time, money, or energy to spare. Other times you’re kneeling with an open hand, which can feel humbling in a way nobody warns you about.
Both positions are part of a healthy life. The trouble starts when one person lives on one side for too long.
Most upright Six of Pentacles keyword lists settle on giving, receiving, sharing wealth, generosity, and charity.
My own reading adds the word reciprocity, because generosity that never comes back eventually runs dry.
The Six of Pentacles upright at a glance
- Core meaning: a fair exchange of support, where giving and receiving stay in balance.
- Relationships: mutual care, a partner who shows up, or a moment to let yourself be looked after.
- Career and finances: a raise, a loan repaid, a donation, a mentor, or resources finally shared fairly.
- Health: support arriving when you need it, plus the reminder that caregivers need care too. Symbolic, never diagnostic.
- Spiritual: gratitude moving in both directions, and the humility to receive as well as give.

CARDS THAT STRENGTHEN IT
- Ten of Pentacles turns generosity into something that lasts for a whole family.
- Queen of Pentacles adds warm, practical care, often from a caregiver.
- Justice keeps the exchange fair and the agreement honest.
CARDS THAT DIMINISH IT
- Four of Pentacles closes the hand before anything can be shared.
- Seven of Swords takes the help and quietly skips the repayment.
- The Devil ties strings to every gift.
“No one has ever become poor from giving.”
Anne Frank“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

How Do Other Cards Amplify or Diminish The Six of Pentacles?
No card reads alone. In every spread, the neighbouring cards either keep the Six of Pentacles in balance or tip the scales.
This is called adjacency: two or more cards working in unison, building one cohesive story instead of a list of single card definitions.
When the Six of Pentacles gets amplified
An amplifier here keeps the exchange generous and fair. Support flows, and it flows both ways.
+Six of Pentacles + Ten of Pentacles
generosity passed down through a family, sometimes an inheritance or shared home.
+Six of Pentacles + Queen of Pentacles
a caregiver giving well, often someone in healthcare or a nurturing role.
+Six of Pentacles + Justice
a fair settlement, a debt repaid, an agreement honoured on both sides.
When the Six of Pentacles gets diminished
A diminishing card tips the scales. It withholds, exploits, or attaches conditions to the gift.
−Six of Pentacles + Four of Pentacles
someone holding back what they could easily share.
−Six of Pentacles + Seven of Swords
money lent and not returned, or help taken without acknowledgement.
−Six of Pentacles + The Devil
generosity used as leverage, a gift that comes with a hook.
When two cards disagree, don’t pick a winner. Acknowledging the disagreement is the reading.

Is The Six of Pentacles a Yes or No Card?
Yes, as long as the exchange is fair.
The Six of Pentacles favours requests for help, support, or resources, especially when both sides benefit.
Its yes comes with a condition, which is that nobody leaves the deal feeling used.
Joan Bunning reads this card as having and not having, across resources, knowledge, and power, which is why the answer depends on where you stand.
Reversed, it leans toward no, or at least not on these terms.
In a live reading I steer away from flat yes or no answers anyway, since your free will does the real work and no card gets to choose on your behalf.
This card simply asks whether the scales would still balance after you said yes.
What Is The Six of Pentacles’ Timing in a Tarot Reading?
Timing under the Six of Pentacles follows the exchange.
Things move once help is asked for, offered, or repaid. Until then, the scales sit waiting.
Six is the number clue, pointing to six days, six weeks, or six months.
When the scales settle
Moon in Taurus places the card in the second decan of Taurus, roughly the thirtieth of April to the tenth of May.
Late spring suits it, the season when gardens start giving back what was planted.
When this card shows up for timing, I ask what’s still owed, in either direction.
Settling that one exchange is usually what gets everything else moving.
What Element and Astrology Rule The Six of Pentacles?
The Six of Pentacles is Moon in Taurus, the nurturing Moon placed in the sign that loves comfort and security.
Astrologers call this an exalted Moon, meaning it works at its best here. Care feels steady, practical, and generous.
Earth is the element, and here it’s fertile earth, the kind that feeds whoever works it.
Each numbered Pentacles card takes a decan, a ten-degree slice of an earth sign, and this one holds the middle third of Taurus.
Nurses, carers, hospice workers, teachers, donors, plus anyone who has ever lent money to someone they love, all recognise this placement.
The Moon also governs receiving. Its lesson here is that letting yourself be fed is part of the cycle, not a failure of it.
What Does The Six of Pentacles Mean in Love, as Feelings, and as a Person?
The Six of Pentacles is the reciprocity card in love, which makes it one of the most practical questions a reading can ask.
Here’s how it tends to read in the questions people ask most.
- In love, if you’re single: meeting someone who gives as much as they take, or noticing who you’ve been giving too much to.
- In love, in a relationship: a partnership where care flows both ways, or a moment to check whether it still does.
- As feelings: they want to take care of you, and they hope you’ll let them.
- As a person: generous, dependable, often a caregiver, sometimes slow to accept help in return.
- As advice: give freely, receive gracefully, and keep an eye on the balance.
- Reversed in love: one person doing all the giving, or affection offered with conditions attached.
What Does the Six of Pentacles Actually Feel Like?
I’ll admit this card took me a long time to grasp, longer than most.
Reading for other people, I found they could be sitting in one of two positions, and the card rarely tells you which. They might be the one receiving, or the one constantly giving.
Receiving is harder than it looks. Having to accept help can feel humiliating sometimes, especially for people who are used to being the strong one.
Giving has its own weight. With the right supporting cards, this one turns up again and again for healthcare workers, plus anyone generous with their time, energy, effort, or money.
Once, it showed up for a client who had lent out thousands of dollars to someone and was waiting for it to come back.
Another time it landed in the hopes and fears position, for someone hoping to be paid back for something they needed or were owed.
It’s always been that way with this card.
Giver or receiver, it’s still an exchange
The hardest part is discerning which side of the scale someone is on.
Either way, the card describes give and take, back and forth. Psychologists call the pull to return what we’ve been given reciprocity, and it holds every healthy relationship together.
Whether you’ve been giving until you’re empty or waiting with your hand out, the card points at the same need.
It’s needing reciprocity. That’s what it is.
If money is part of the picture, keep any plan simple and general, and talk to a qualified professional before lending or borrowing anything significant.
↓ REVERSED
What Does The Six of Pentacles Tarot Card Mean Reversed?
Reversed, the scales tip.
One version is giving that has turned one-sided, where someone pours out far more than ever comes back.
The other is help with strings attached, a gift that quietly buys control.
When generosity loses its balance
Resentment tends to grow quietly in this version.
A loan that never returns, a favour that becomes an expectation, a caregiver running on empty.
When this card reverses in a spread, I ask who you’ve been giving to that hasn’t given anything back.
The standard reading of the Six of Pentacles reversed lists power dynamics, abuse of generosity, gifts with strings attached, inequality, and extortion.
The Six of Pentacles reversed at a glance
- Core meaning: an exchange out of balance, through overgiving, withholding, or control.
- Relationships: one partner carrying the care, or affection used as leverage.
- Career and finances: unpaid debts, unfair pay, a loan you may need to let go of or formally pursue.
- Health: caregiver burnout, or support you need and haven’t asked for. Symbolic, never diagnostic.
- Spiritual: learning that self-care is part of generosity, not the opposite of it.

CARDS THAT SHARPEN THE WARNING

Kahlil Gibran“Never look down on anybody unless you’re helping them up.”
