The Wheel of Fortune Tarot Card Meaning: Upright & Reversed
Keywords, Symbols, Colors, Astrology, Love, Timing & Yes or No
Four winged creatures hold the corners, and not one of them is turning the wheel. A sphinx sits at the top with a sword across its knees, a jackal-headed figure rises up one side, a serpent slides down the other, and the whole apparatus moves with nobody’s hand on it.
Most people meet this card during the week their life changed without asking permission first.
Welcome to the eleventh entry in my tarot glossary.
The Fool leapt, The Magician built, The High Priestess listened, The Empress grew, The Emperor framed it, The Hierophant taught it, The Lovers chose, The Chariot drove, Strength gentled the lion, The Hermit went quiet, and now the tarot deck spins.
Below you’ll find the card’s symbols, its color psychology, upright plus reversed meanings with keyword lists, what it means in love or as feelings, how other cards amplify or diminish it, its planet, its zodiac sign, timing, whether it leans yes or no, and my own intuitive read after years of pulling it for clients.
Stay to the end to see what this card holds for anyone whose life turned over without warning.

NEVER HAD A READING WITH ME BEFORE?
The Wheel of Fortune puts a sphinx, a jackal and a serpent in charge of your luck, which explains a fair amount about how the last few years have gone.

What Does The Wheel of Fortune Tarot Card Actually Mean?
The Wheel of Fortune is card ten of the Major Arcana, the moment the deck stops being about you.
Ten closes the first decade of the journey. Everything from The Fool through The Hermit was personal effort, and this card introduces the part no amount of effort controls.
Picture fate arriving on a schedule nobody published.
Nobody’s hand on the wheel
In the Rider Waite Smith image, a great wheel hangs in a cloudless sky, lettered and symbol-covered, flanked by three creatures and watched by four more.
Look for the hand that turns it and you won’t find one.
That absence is the point. Some turns in a life arrive without an author, and this card asks what you’ll do with one.
The design pulls from the medieval rota fortunae, the wheel of the goddess Fortuna, where kings rode up one side and off the other in full view of everybody.
Rachel Pollack’s 78 Degrees of Wisdom reads it as the moment personal will meets a larger pattern, and has to make peace with it.
What Are the Symbols on The Wheel of Fortune Tarot Card?
Pamela Colman Smith loaded this card heavier than almost any other in the deck.
Every mark on the wheel is doing work, and the creatures around it are there to tell you what stays fixed while everything else moves.
- The letters T A R O: readable as TAROT, or ROTA, the Latin for wheel. Also TORA, the law. One ring, three meanings, all of them circular.
- The Hebrew letters: the Tetragrammaton woven between the Latin ones, the unspeakable name of God threaded through the mechanism of luck.
- The alchemical symbols: mercury, sulphur, water, and salt on the inner ring, the four elements of transformation already loaded into the turn.
- The sphinx: seated at the top with a sword, calm at the only point on a wheel that isn’t moving much. Riddles are its entire profession.
- The jackal-headed figure: Anubis rising on the right, the guide who escorts you through transitions rather than around them.
- The serpent: Typhon descending on the left, the drop side of the wheel, which nobody thanks and everybody meets.
- The four winged creatures: angel, eagle, lion, and bull in the corners, the fixed signs of Aquarius, Scorpio, Leo, and Taurus. Stability framing the chaos.
- The books they hold: each creature reads while the wheel spins, which is roughly the best advice this card has to offer.
- The number ten: completion of one full cycle, with the next one already loaded.
What Do the Colors on The Wheel of Fortune Tarot Card Mean in Psychology?
Color does quiet work on the mind before a single meaning gets read.
Psychologists have long tied specific hues to specific responses, and this palette is built for motion.
THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE COLOR PALETTE
Each color is pulled from the card itself, with what it tends to stir in you.
Fortune gold seen in the wheel, the lettering
Value and consequence, the sense that this turn matters.
Jupiter yellow seen in the open sky
Optimism and expansion, luck with room to grow into.
Cloud white seen under the four creatures
The fixed corners, whatever holds still while you spin.
Sphinx blue seen in the headdress at the top
Composure at altitude, the calm of not needing to know yet.
Jackal ochre seen in Anubis on the rise
Earth and escort, the company you get through a transition.
Serpent red seen in Typhon sliding down

What Does The Wheel of Fortune Tarot Card Mean Upright?
Upright, the Wheel of Fortune is change that has already started.
Luck, cycles, destiny, a turning point arriving whether or not your calendar had room for it.
Momentum belongs to the situation here rather than to you, which is good news more often than people expect.
Move with the turn, never against it
Timing is the real subject of this card.
The Wheel rewards whoever notices which direction things are already going, then leans that way instead of bracing.
When this card turns up, something in your life is moving on its own and asking you to cooperate rather than negotiate.
Most upright Wheel of Fortune keyword lists land on the same handful of words: good luck, karma, life cycles, destiny, a turning point.
That tracks with what I see when it arrives for someone describing a run of events they can’t account for.
The Wheel of Fortune upright at a glance
- Core meaning: a turning point already in motion, with cooperation beating resistance every time.
- Relationships: a chance meeting, a shift in an existing bond, or a cycle completing. Timing does what effort couldn’t.
- Career and finances: an unexpected offer, a market turn in your favour, money arriving from a direction you weren’t watching. Luck favours whoever stays ready.
- Health: a change in the pattern, energy cycling back up, the body moving into a different phase. Read it as energy rather than diagnosis.
- Spiritual: trust in a larger pattern, karma visible for once, the sense of being carried rather than steering.

CARDS THAT STRENGTHEN IT
- The Sun lands the turn in full daylight, luck you can actually see arriving.
- Ace of Pentacles attaches something solid to the fortune, often an offer.
- Six of Wands carries the turn all the way through to recognition.
CARDS THAT DIMINISH IT
- Four of Pentacles grips exactly what the wheel came to move.
- Eight of Swords insists you have no say in any of it.
- The Hanged Man suspends the rotation halfway and leaves it there.
“There is nothing permanent except change.”
Heraclitus“Fortune favors the bold.”
Virgil
How Do Other Cards Amplify or Diminish The Wheel of Fortune?
No card reads alone. In every spread, the neighbouring cards either speed the Wheel’s turn or jam it.
This is called adjacency: two or more cards working in unison, building one cohesive story instead of a list of single card definitions.
When the Wheel of Fortune gets amplified
An amplifier adds motion. Change beside change, opening beside opening.
- Wheel of Fortune + The Sun: a turn that lands in daylight, with the luck obvious to everyone watching.
- Wheel of Fortune + Ace of Pentacles: fortune with something tangible attached, very often money or a formal offer.
- Wheel of Fortune + The World: one full cycle closing at the same moment the next one opens.
When the Wheel of Fortune gets diminished
A diminishing card brakes. It clings, stalls, or convinces you the turn is happening to you rather than around you.
- Wheel of Fortune + Four of Pentacles: holding tight to the one thing the wheel arrived to move.
- Wheel of Fortune + Eight of Swords: change underway while you’re certain you have no part in it.
- Wheel of Fortune + The Hanged Man: the turn stalling mid-rotation, suspended rather than resolved.
When two cards disagree, don’t pick a winner. Acknowledging the disagreement is the reading.

Is The Wheel of Fortune a Yes or No Card?
Yes, though not on your schedule.
The Wheel of Fortune answers yes for questions about change, opportunity, and whether something is going to move at all.
Its yes comes with a caveat about control, since the timing belongs to the situation and not to you.
Reversed, the answer shifts toward no for now, usually pointing at a delay or a cycle that hasn’t finished running.
In a live reading I steer away from flat yes or no answers anyway, since your free will does the real work and no card gets to choose on your behalf.
Speaking in glossary terms, though, this card leans toward a yes that’s already in progress.
What Is The Wheel of Fortune’s Timing in a Tarot Reading?
Timing under the Wheel of Fortune tends to be quick, which catches people off guard.
Jupiter moves generously, and a wheel in motion doesn’t pause for anyone’s readiness.
Expect developments inside weeks, often starting before you’ve finished deciding how you feel.
Fast, and already underway
Sagittarius season is the traditional window, roughly late November into December, with Jupiter’s expansiveness behind it.
Ten is the other timing clue, showing up as ten days, ten weeks, or ten months depending on the question.
When I see the Wheel for timing, I read it as already begun.
Clients usually recognise the turn in hindsight, having dated it earlier than they first thought.
What Planet and Zodiac Sign Rule The Wheel of Fortune?
The Wheel of Fortune belongs to Jupiter, the planet of expansion, luck, and the long view.
Jupiter rules Sagittarius, which lends the card its optimism plus its total disinterest in staying put.
Some correspondence tables place this card with Aquarius rather than Sagittarius, reading it through the fixed air creature in the top corner. Jupiter stays constant across both, so use whichever matches the spread in front of you.
Fire is the element tying it together, momentum and faith, the willingness to move before the outcome is confirmed.
If you carry strong Sagittarius placements, or a prominent Jupiter, the Wheel may feel less like a stranger and more like a mirror.
Travellers, gamblers, entrepreneurs, anyone who has rebuilt after a crash, plus everyone who ended up somewhere better by accident, all live under this light.

What Does The Wheel of Fortune Mean in Love, as Feelings, and as a Person?
The Wheel of Fortune is the least predictable love card in the tarot deck.
Here’s how it tends to read in the questions people ask most.
- In love, if you’re single: a chance encounter, often somebody arriving from nowhere. Timing accomplishes what effort couldn’t.
- In love, in a relationship: a turning point, a familiar cycle coming round again, or a shift neither of you planned.
- As feelings: feelings in motion rather than settled. Someone’s view of you is changing, usually in your favour.
- As a person: lucky, optimistic, restless, hard to pin down, often a Sagittarius whose life moves in visible chapters.
- As advice: stop pushing the wheel. Notice which way it’s already turning, then move with it.
- Reversed in love: a cycle you keep repeating, bad timing, or resistance to the change the relationship is asking for.
What The Wheel of Fortune Teaches When Life Turns Over Without Warning
Here’s what this card means when it turns up for someone on the other side of a live reading.
Often it arrives for a person still dating their life from one phone call.
The diagnosis, the accident, the knock at the door. One minute belonging to the version of them that didn’t know yet, the next belonging to the one that did.
Nobody turned the wheel for them. Nothing was earned, deserved, or arranged, which is precisely what makes it so hard to make sense of.
Look at the four creatures in the corners, though. Each one sits perfectly still, reading, while the whole thing spins.
The wheel turns. What it turns around does not.
That distinction sits at the centre of this card for me. Circumstances are the part that rotates, and they will rotate again, sometimes mercifully.
What you love isn’t on the rim. It’s at the hub, and the hub holds while the rest goes round.
Grief feels like freefall because the outer edge is where the speed is. Hold onto what doesn’t move.
↓ REVERSED
What Does The Wheel of Fortune Tarot Card Mean Reversed?
Reversed, the Wheel of Fortune jams in one of two ways.
One version is the downturn, a run of genuinely rotten luck arriving through no fault of yours.
The other is resistance, a wheel still trying to turn against somebody holding the spokes.
The same chapter on repeat
Repetition is the clearest signal of this reversal.
Same argument, same job, same type of person, same month of the year. The cycle keeps coming round because nothing in it has been allowed to complete.
When this card reverses in a spread, I ask what you’re holding on to, plus what would move if you let go of it for a week.
The standard reading of the Wheel of Fortune reversed frames it as bad luck, clinging to control, unwelcome change, and delay.
The Wheel of Fortune reversed at a glance
- Core meaning: a cycle repeating without resolving, or change resisted until it costs more.
- Relationships: the same pattern with a different person, bad timing, or a bond stuck where it stopped growing.
- Career and finances: delays, a deal falling through, an opportunity missed by hesitation, money leaking through a hole nobody has looked for.
- Health: a pattern that keeps returning, flare-ups on a cycle, the appointment postponed one more time. Symbolic, never diagnostic.
- Spiritual: fighting the current, or treating a hard season as proof the universe has singled you out.
REVERSED KEYWORDS

CARDS THAT SHARPEN THE WARNING
- Five of Pentacles puts a real cost on the downturn.
- Ten of Swords marks the bottom of the rotation, where it finally stops.
- Four of Pentacles shows whose knuckles are white on the spokes.
CARDS THAT SOFTEN IT
- The Star reminds you the bottom of a wheel is still a position on it.
- Temperance steadies the pacing until the cycle completes properly.
- Ace of Wands hands the next rotation an actual spark.
“Fortune is like glass: it breaks when it shines brightest.”
Publilius Syrus“To everything there is a season.”
