The Night I Saw a Ghost: A Psychic Medium’s True Story

The Night I Watched a Spirit Take Shape: A Medium’s True Seance Story

Reading time: about 18 minutes.

A TRUE STORY FROM THE CIRCLE

Thousands of readings in, I’ve watched a spirit fully take form exactly once.

What it taught me has very little to do with fear.

This is my true ghost story, the one where I witnessed one manifest in front of me with my eyes during a life altering seance. People are often surprised I don’t have more of them, considering what I do for a living. I have very few, really, and this one is the most impactful night of my entire life.

Wherever this finds you, we’re in a reflective season, the light is changing. In the north, the evenings are folding in early, porch lights glowing by suppertime. Down south, jacaranda trees are spilling purple across the pavements, the days stretching long again.

Some of you are carving pumpkins this week. Others have never celebrated Halloween at all, or feel nothing for it beyond a raised eyebrow at the candy aisle. You won’t need the holiday for this story. Spirit has never kept a calendar.

What follows is the only time I’ve ever watched a spirit materialize in front of a room full of witnesses. I was seventeen, almost eighteen, holding hands with near strangers around a single candle in the deep of winter.

Somewhere in the middle, a name will drop into my mind that I had no business knowing. Near the end, a scent will fill the room that no perfumer has ever managed to bottle. After that, I’ll share the five things that night taught me, including the one I wish someone had whispered to me at seventeen.

A small request before you begin.

Eighteen minutes is a lot to ask of anyone. I rarely ask it. Make a cup of tea, find a quiet corner, maybe light a candle of your own. This story only makes full sense at the very bottom, where everything that night taught me is waiting. I promise it’s worth the walk.

How Did a Teenager End Up Sitting in a Real Seance Circle?

A friendship carried on late night phone linesThe people who understand your strangeness are your home. Quote illustrating friendship between two young psychics in a psychic medium's true ghost story.

At fifteen, I was a quietly obsessed kid. Psychics, spiritualism, magick, mysticism, anything that hinted at a world behind this one. Most evenings found me cross legged on my bedroom floor with a stack of library books on psychic development, half hoping, half embarrassed to be hoping.

Somewhere in the background, Unsolved Mysteries was almost certainly playing, that theme music creeping up the spine while Robert Stack’s trench coat drifted through the fog.

I’d made a quiet resolution back then: keep my real interests to myself. To most people, I was simply a teenager. The part of me that practiced telekinesis before bed stayed folded away, like a letter I wasn’t ready to send.

That changed when I met someone online who felt like a mirror: Brough Perkins. He’d begun working as a psychic medium while still in grade school, then grew it into his full time profession. Over three years, he became a confidant, a colleague, an ally.

We talked for hours on the phone, ferrying each other through the strange weather of our teenage years. Between calls, we practiced constantly online. From opposite ends of the country, we traded telepathy plus remote viewing exercises, sending images back and forth, delighted every time one landed. For the first time, someone knew the folded away part of me.

Then he went through his first real heartbreak. I wanted him to know, without any doubt, that he had a friend who’d show up. I quietly bought a plane ticket, then flew across the country to sit with him.

My parents didn’t know where I was going. I’m not proud of that part, though I can’t quite bring myself to regret it either.

His family welcomed me as if I’d always had a seat at their dinner. Above all, his mother had a warmth I still think about. Within days, he asked if I’d like to come along to a client’s home where something unusual had been happening.

I said yes before he finished the sentence.

What Is a Seance, and Where Did Spiritualism Begin?

Three knocks in a small farmhousePeople have always joined hands in the dark to ask whether love lasts. Quote evoking the history of seances and Spiritualism, from a psychic medium's true seance story.

Long before ghost hunting shows, there were the Fox sisters. In 1848, in the hamlet of Hydesville, New York, two young girls claimed a spirit in their farmhouse answered their questions through a code of knocks.

Word travelled like wildfire. Within a few years, parlours across North America plus Britain were dimming their lamps, joining hands, waiting. Spiritualism grew into a genuine movement, built on one radiant conviction: the soul continues, and love can still reach across.

The sisters’ story grew complicated later. Decades on, one confessed to trickery, then took the confession back. The debate has never fully settled, as these debates rarely do.

Spiritualism outlived the controversy anyway. Spiritualist churches still hold services. Communities like Lily Dale still welcome seekers every summer. Britain’s Spiritualist National Union still teaches principles first set down in the 1800s, among them “the communion of spirits and the ministry of angels.”

I’d read about all of it as a teenager, flat on my bedroom floor. Reading about a knock is one thing. Hearing a wall answer you is something else entirely.

A seance was never meant to summon fear. At its heart, it’s an act of remembrance.

What Do People Experience in a Haunted Home?

The father who couldn’t stayYou're not crazy. You're paying attention. Quote reassuring people experiencing signs of a haunted house, from a psychic medium's true ghost story.

It was the middle of winter, the kind of cold that makes your teeth ache. The house sat in a hushed stretch of backcountry suburbs, snow banked high along the drive.

As we walked up, the man of the house was walking out. He barely met our eyes. Whatever he’d been living with, he wanted no part of it that night.

Inside, the house felt ordinary. Warm lamps, a family’s clutter, the smell of dinner lingering. His wife sat us down, folded her hands, then began.

She’d buckled her baby son into his car seat in the kitchen, then stepped into the bathroom for a moment. When she came back, the car seat was in the living room. The family dog was circling it, barking at empty air.

There was more. A man’s voice murmuring through the baby monitor when no man was home. Objects drifting from where she’d left them. Knocks inside the walls.

I nodded politely, tucking every word away with a healthy grain of salt. I was curious, open, but unconvinced. Teenagers make excellent skeptics.

What Actually Happens During a Seance?

Breathing as oneBreathe together long enough and the room starts listening. Quote describing what happens during a real seance circle, from a psychic medium's true story.

We sat in a circle around a single candle, its flame the only light in the room. Hands joined. Brough guided us through slow breathing until our rhythms softened into one shared tide.

I’ve since come to understand what a seance really does. The circle generates enough energy for those in spirit to draw upon, a living battery they can borrow from to come through.

If someone lets go of a hand, nothing terrible happens. The experience simply ends, like hanging up a phone.

A fog rising from the floorboards

The first change began at our feet. A cold, dense heaviness, rising slowly through our ankles, our knees, our chests; invisible, but like fog rolling off a lake at dawn. Every person in that circle felt it at the very same moment.

Brough began speaking softly with his spirit guide, as easily as you’d speak to someone sitting beside you. Then the air turned.

A smell crept in, putrid, sulphurous, something close to rot. Breathing grew thick, laboured, as if the room had run short of air.

I thought of every ghost hunting episode I’d ever watched, where someone clutches their chest and gasps that the air feels tight. I used to roll my eyes at those moments. Sitting in that circle, I finally understood them.

Someone whispered, “Do you smell that?”

“Sorry,” I said, “I’ll close my legs.”

A few people snorted. The circle loosened by a notch.

Humour has always been my lantern in dark rooms. Even then, I wasn’t afraid. Curiosity simply had a firmer grip on me than fear ever could.

How Can You Tell a Spirit From Ordinary Goosebumps?

The air began to humFear gives you a shiver. Spirit changes the air. Quote explaining the difference between goosebumps and a spirit presence, from a psychic medium.

If you take one practical thing from this story, let it be this. A spirit encounter doesn’t feel like fear. It feels like weather.

The hair on the back of my neck rose, though not from dread. Instead, the air itself had become charged, dense, almost humming. Every hair on my arms lifted with it, the way they do in the stillness before lightning.

Then came tiny crackles in the dark, small tight pops. I assumed my eyes were adjusting, until I noticed faint blue sparks flickering off the shoulders of the people across from me.

“Did anyone else just see static jump off someone?” a voice asked. I could feel it lifting off my own shoulders too.

Winter air is dry, I know. Static electricity was the first explanation my skeptical brain reached for. Nobody was moving, though. We sat perfectly still, hands joined, while the room gently crackled softly around us.

Telling them apart

  • Goosebumps arrive with a thought, a song, a draft, a fright, then fade within seconds.
  • A spirit encounter changes the air itself: thicker, denser, almost electric, lingering.
  • Goosebumps belong to one body.
  • A presence is often felt by everyone in the room at once.
  • Goosebumps rarely carry a scent.
  • Spirit often brings one: flowers, tobacco, perfume, or something far less pleasant.

What Does a Spirit Look Like When It Manifests?

Less like a figure, more like a memory of light

That’s when it happened. In front of all of us, a spirit began to take shape.

It looked nothing like the movies. Up close, it resembled an afterimage, that soft ghost of light left behind when you stare at a candle flame, then glance away. Your first instinct is to blame your eyes.

The woman beside me leaned closer. “Do you see that? Behind them?”

Past our circle lay an adjoining room, black as ink. The dog bolted under a chair. Something knocked on the wall behind us. Small sounds began tugging at the edges of our attention, as though the house itself were stirring awake.

Every blink made it clearer

A bluish shape drifted out of that dark room, pulsing gently. Vaporous, translucent, like woodsmoke you could see straight through. Strangely, it sharpened each time I blinked.

Then it gathered itself into a human form. Shoulders widened. A head took shape. Where eyes should have been, two hollows deepened.

Slowly, it began to circle us.

Being watched is one thing. This was the feeling of being permeated.

When it passed behind me, my stomach turned over. A sick, sinking unease spread through me, far deeper than the sense of eyes on my back.

There was nothing kind in it. What I felt was restlessness, a pacing, churning quality, threaded with something I can only call envy. It felt like a presence that had spent a very long time watching the living, wanting what they had.

In that moment, a name surfaced in my mind, clear as a bell struck in an empty church.

Isaac.

Barely a breath later, Brough spoke it aloud. “Isaac.”

He’d plucked it straight from my thoughts. I remember the jolt of that more vividly than the apparition itself, because it meant the quiet voice I’d spent years second guessing had been right all along.

What Happens When a Spirit Refuses to Move On?

One knock for yes, two for no

Brough began asking simple questions. The answers came from inside the wall behind us: one knock for yes, two for no.

Somewhere in my chest, the teenager who’d read about Hydesville on his bedroom floor went very still. Nearly a century and a half later, the same language was rapping through a stranger’s living room.

It soon became clear this spirit had no intention of leaving. The knocks grew stubborn, then heavy, then defiant.

We did everything we could to help it reconcile. You could feel that a door stood open, that moving on was entirely possible. It simply didn’t want to walk through.

A long awaited morningLove walks in, and the room remembers roses. Quote about smelling roses as a sign of loving spirit presence, from a psychic medium's true seance story.

Brough called in what he described as beneficial celestial beings. The communion of spirits, the ministry of angels, right there in a suburban living room.

Instantly, something shifted in the pit of my stomach. It felt like Christmas morning, or the breathless crest of a roller coaster just before the drop. Anticipation, sweet plus electric.

Warmth flooded the circle. Then came a fragrance: fresh cut flowers, white roses, so pure it seemed to have colour. Several of us saw the same pale bloom in our mind’s eye at once.

It remains the most beautiful scent I’ve ever encountered. No perfume has come close, and I’ve stopped expecting one to.

Sulphur gives way to roses the moment love walks into the room.

A shape among the pines

Afterward, Brough turned to us with a strange, gentle smile. “Do you want to see what happens when a spirit refuses to move on?”

The lights came up. Everything felt different, lighter, as if the house had exhaled. We stepped onto the back porch into the biting cold, forest stretching black for miles under the stars.

Out past the property line, drifting between the trees, moved a faint blue afterimage. Leaving. Unhurried. Unwilling, perhaps, yet leaving all the same.

Seeing it beyond the property line confirmed everything the circle had sensed inside. Whatever it was, it had chosen to stay close to the land.

I stood there long after the others went inside, breath clouding in front of me, unable to look away.

My first reading, a few days later

The trip had one more surprise in it. A few days later, a client arrived for a reading with Brough, bringing a friend along. Brough turned to me. “I’d like you to practice,” he said. “Do your first reading on her.”

I did. The reading poured out of me, detail after detail, each one landing.

It was phenomenal. More than that, it was proof. Whatever I’d been seeing, sensing, feeling all those years alone in my room, I hadn’t been making it up.

At seventeen, I gave my first professional reading to a paying client. Back home, I started reading for a few people here and there, though I honestly thought it was far too strange to ever become a career. That’s a story for another day.

You’re past the halfway point. The part that finally quieted my doubts is just ahead.

Why Do Ghosts Look Like Afterimages?

The doubt that creeps in afterward

Something strange happens after a night like that. The mind, eager to keep its tidy world intact, gets to work.

Maybe my eyes were adjusting to the dark. Perhaps the candle had burned a shape into my vision, or I’d wanted it so badly that I painted it there myself. Years passed, and the memory never dimmed, though the second guessing kept circling it like a moth.

Then, many years later, I watched The Pantry Ghost Documentary.

A door that opened at the same minute

It follows a California family whose glass pantry door began swinging open at the very same time every night. The father started filming, then posting the clips to YouTube, documenting nearly every moment of their lives as the activity spread through the house. Before long, the videos became a phenomenon of their own.

Skeptics have picked at it for years, and you’re welcome to make up your own mind. I believe it.

One moment stopped me cold. The family’s daughter had befriended the spirit of a young girl in the house. As she remembered it, the spirit asked if she wanted to see what she looked like. When she said yes, the spirit told her to stare at a candle, or a light, then look away.

She did. There, in the afterimage, the girl appeared.

Full body chills. Every hair on my arms stood up, just as it had in that winter living room. Here was someone else, years apart, describing the exact phenomenon I’d spent so long talking myself out of. It anchored everything.

Look at the flame, then look away. Sometimes that’s where they’ve been standing all along.

The voice on the baby monitor

Early in the film Insidious, a mother hears a man’s voice crackling through her baby monitor, then the whole house begins to rattle. Most audiences shiver once and reach for the popcorn.

I sat frozen. I’d watched a real mother describe that very thing with her hands folded in her lap, her husband too shaken to stay in the house. For one night, I’d felt a sliver of what she’d been living with. I can only imagine what months of it must have done to her.

A LIGHT IN THE DARK

Is something happening in your home?

Why Are Some Places Haunted?

Emotion leaves a residueGrief that never gets spoken stays in the walls. Quote about why places become haunted through unspoken grief and residual emotion, from a psychic medium.

The places that feel most haunted tend to share a history. Hospitals. Asylums. Prisons. Buildings where physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual suffering happened over and over again.

In my experience, hauntings gather where emotion has nowhere left to go: unfinished business, grief that never found a voice, fragments of people who never felt reconciled with how their lives ended. The old Stone Tape idea, that places can hold intense moments the way tape holds sound, touches on something similar.

Abandoned buildings carry much of that weight. Denser energies seem drawn to places that feel isolated, lonely, forgotten, where old emotion lingers like damp in the walls.

The spirit who watched the families

That presence in the winter house felt bound to the land itself. Over the years, it had watched family after family move in, raise children, celebrate, quarrel, grow old, then move on. Somewhere along the way, it seemed to decide the place was its.

That’s where the envy came from, I think. Some spirits linger, watching the living with a quiet, aching want for everything we still get to touch.

Where Do Souls Go After Death?

Every single one of us goes homeEvery soul finds its way home. Every single one. Quote offering comfort that every soul goes home after death, from a psychic medium.

Some Spiritualists believe what lingers in a haunted place isn’t a whole soul at all. It’s a portion, an imprint, emotional residue left behind like a fingerprint on glass. In that view, no soul is ever truly lost.

What I know for certain is this: our souls don’t belong to us. They return to where they came from. Home. All of us, every single one, without exception.

I also sense that a part of us can exist in more than one place at once. Outside this physical life, time plus space don’t behave the way we’re used to. They fold in on themselves, overlap, like pages of a book pressed shut.

Parallel dimensions brush against ours constantly. That’s all heaven really is, I believe: a state of heart, a state of mind, a blend of both. It’s never far away. Truly, it never has been.

Heaven isn’t a destination waiting at the end of the road. It’s folded right into this one.

Should You Be Afraid of Negative Entities?

Roughly as threatening as a bad fartFear is the only thing that feeds the dark. Stop feeding it. Quote about fear feeding negative entities and how to stop it, from a psychic medium.

Plenty of people live with a low hum of dread about something dark lurking in the corner, watching. I understand it. Horror films have done a thorough job.

Honestly, though, I’ve always felt negative entities are no different than a bad fart. Unpleasant, yes. Lingering, sometimes. Eventually, it clears.

Fear is what feeds them. Almost anything feeds on fear, really. Most of the time, these presences don’t need your attention at all, and the less you feed them, the less there is to notice.

When a denser presence does draw near, its influence tends to be psychological. It might stir up heavier feelings, or leave you feeling cut off from everyone you love. Recognizing that is half the work of loosening its grip.

How Do You Clear Negative Energy From a Room?

Clap like you live hereYou're the one who's alive here. Take up the space. Quote about clearing negative energy from a room with intention, from a psychic medium.

Years ago, I read in metaphysical books that clapping breaks up stagnant energy. I rolled my eyes. It sounded far too woo, too wishy washy.

The longer I thought about it, the more sense it made. Picture heavy energy as an energetic cobweb strung across a corner. You’re the one who’s alive in that room. Any sound you make with emotional intention, a sharp clap, a firm word, a door opened wide, asserts that authority. Cobwebs don’t survive a living hand sweeping through them.

Smoke works beautifully too. Light incense with a clear intention, then let it drift through the room, shifting the frequency as it goes. I believe in the power of cedar, sage, salt water, all of it.

The secret is that none of these tools do the work on their own. Intention is the engine; the clap, the smoke, the spoken word are simply its extension. Set the intention first, then act. That’s all it is.

Afterward, tune yourself back. Think of loving memories, people who make you feel warm, moments that felt like being held. Return to them in your mind. That’s what sets your frequency, far more than anything lurking in the corner ever could.

If you feel something in the room

  1. Breathe first. Slow your breath until your body settles.
  2. Notice what changed. Temperature, air density, scent, the hair on your arms.
  3. Catch the first impression. A name, a word, an image. Don’t argue with it.
  4. Set your intention. Something simple: “This is my home. Only love is welcome here.”
  5. Make it heard. Clap sharply in each corner, speak the intention aloud, or carry smoke or salt water through the room.
  6. Tune your frequency. Sit with one warm, loving memory until you feel it in your chest.
  7. Write it down. Record everything in your notebook, then let it rest.

You stayed. Thank you. This is the part I wrote the whole story for.

What Did Seeing a Spirit Teach Me?

Five lessons I’ve carried ever sinceNot every thought in your head is yours. The quiet ones are usually right. Quote about trusting quiet intuitive impressions, the lesson from a psychic medium's true ghost story.

I’ve stood in extraordinarily haunted places since that night. The air has thickened around me more times than I can count. Never again have I watched a spirit gather itself into form, or felt a room crackle quite like that.

Years later, I even ended a relationship partly because the other person believed nothing waits beyond this life. I couldn’t pretend I hadn’t seen what I’d seen. Some knowledge, once it arrives, simply moves in.

That trip taught me more than I could absorb at the time: about what we see, sense, feel, taste, smell, plus how our thoughts don’t always belong to us. Here’s what it left with me.

  1. The quietest impression is usually the truest. Isaac arrived as a whisper, not a shout. Not every thought in your head is yours; some are simply passing through. Intuition rarely raises its voice, which is exactly why we dismiss it. Say the first thing that comes to mind.
  2. Love is the stronger frequency. Sulphur filled that room until love was invited in. Then roses. Heavy energy doesn’t win arguments with love; it simply runs out of room.
  3. Fear is optional. Curiosity, humour, even a badly timed joke can hold steadier ground than dread. You’re allowed to be unafraid of the unseen.
  4. Your soul is enough protection. Smoke, cedar, salt water, a single sharp clap: each works because it carries your intention. You already have everything you need.
  5. Showing up is a spiritual act. I thought I’d crossed the country only to comfort a heartbroken friend. That simple act of loyalty is what placed me inside the most extraordinary night of my life. Spirit often meets us where love has already led.

That fifth one is what I wish someone had whispered to me at seventeen. Your devotion to the people you love isn’t separate from your spiritual life. Very often, it is your spiritual life.

THE LAST CANDLE

This veil was never a wall. It’s a breath, and some nights you can see through it.

Wherever you’re reading this, under falling leaves or opening blossoms, I hope you’ll trust the quiet voice a little more. It’s been right more often than you’ve let it be.
