Why Won’t a Good Tarot Reader Answer “Will My Ex Come Back?”

I don’t answer yes or no questions, and “will my ex come back?” is about as yes or no as questions get. That isn’t evasion. It’s respect for free will, yours plus theirs.
Your ex is a whole person making choices in real time. Their decisions belong to them. Any reader who claims to have those choices pinned to cardstock is selling you confidence, not clairvoyance.

The Wheel of Fortune (X) is the card of momentum, cycles plus serendipity. In a love reading, it promises a shift while keeping the details to itself.
That turning wheel might carry an old flame back around. It might just as easily roll someone entirely new into view. The Wheel deals in momentum, never in names.
I’ve noticed a pattern with returning clients. Someone asks about an ex in one reading, then comes back months later asking about a person the Wheel hadn’t introduced yet. The reading they remember isn’t the one that soothed the old ache. It’s the one that left the door open.
The door you keep watching isn’t the only one that opens.
Then there’s The Hermit (IX), chronically misread as loneliness. It’s really an invitation to step back, reflect plus recentre. When The Hermit appears in an ex reading, the relationship most in need of tending is the one you have with yourself.

- Six of Cups: nostalgia. Sweet memories, though memory tends to edit out the difficult parts.
- Five of Cups: grief over what spilled. Notice the two cups still standing behind you.
- Eight of Cups: walking away from something that no longer fills you, even when it’s painful.
- Three of Swords: heartache named honestly, the first step toward healing it.
- Two of Cups: mutual connection. In an ex reading, often a reminder of what you’re truly looking for.
- Judgement (XX): a reckoning, an awakening, a call to rise into a new version of yourself.
None of these cards is a verdict on your ex. Every one of them describes what’s moving inside you, which is the only part of the story you can actually steer.

What Should You Ask the Cards About Your Ex Instead?
Not the answer you came for. The one you needed
A yes leaves you exactly where you were: waiting. Waiting is the quiet thief in these readings. It borrows months of a life, then returns nothing.
What the cards reliably surface is far more valuable: the pattern that shaped the relationship, the need it met, the need it starved, plus the direction your healing wants to travel.
How to prepare better questions about an ex
- Write down the question you really want answered. “Will they come back?” is fine to admit on paper.
- Notice the fear underneath it. Being alone? Feeling unlovable? Having wasted time? Name it plainly.
- Rewrite it as an open question. Start with what, how, where or why, such as “What am I still holding from this relationship?”

- Keep it to one to three questions. Write them at least 24 hours before your reading.
- Take notes during the reading. Revisit them in a few months; you’ll see how far you’ve travelled.
The moment you trade “will they come back?” for “what role do I play in shaping my relationships?”, the reading stops being about your ex at all. That’s usually when the healing starts.
