Sometimes, partway through a reading, a court card lands beside a particular Major Arcana card, and a zodiac sign flashes into my mind. The Knight of Wands next to Temperance, for instance, and suddenly I’m seeing a Sagittarius. I’ll often hold that impression until the end, then ask, “Is this you?”
It’s eerily accurate more often than not. That moment is where tarot plus astrology stop being two separate hobbies and start working as one language.

How Are Tarot plus Astrology Connected?
Two symbolic languages, one shared grammar
Tarot began as a fifteenth century Italian card game, while astrology is thousands of years older. They didn’t start out together.
The marriage was arranged in Victorian London. In the late 1800s, an occult society called the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn assigned a sign, planet or element to every Major Arcana card, plus a slice of the zodiac to most Minor Arcana cards. Pamela Colman Smith, who illustrated the Rider Waite Smith tarot deck, was a member. Those correspondences are woven right into the images most of us learned on.
A simple way to hold the relationship:
- Tarot tells the story: what’s unfolding, what needs focus, what you’re working through.
- Astrology sets the season: the cycles, qualities plus timing that story moves through.
An honest note: science hasn’t validated astrology as a way to predict events. I use it the way the Golden Dawn intended, as a symbolic layer that sparks intuition, never as a rulebook that overrides it.
Which Tarot Card Matches Each Zodiac Sign?
Find your sign, then meet your card
Each of the twelve zodiac signs corresponds to one Major Arcana card. Every card below also lists your sign’s element, its ruling planet’s tarot card, plus your three decan cards from the Minor Arcana.
Exact sign dates shift by a day or so from year to year, so if you were born on a cusp, check your birth chart.
Aries: The Emperor (IV) builds the kingdom

Shadow side: excess, or running toward the horizon to avoid what’s right here.

Which Tarot Cards Represent the Planets?
Ten Major Arcana cards carry a planet in their pocket
Not every Major Arcana card belongs to a sign. Seven carry the classical planets, while three carry elements, which later astrologers linked to the outer planets.
The planets in the Major Arcana
- Mercury, The Magician (I): communication, skill, the power of words.
- The Moon, The High Priestess (II): intuition, mystery, inner knowing.
- Venus, The Empress (III): love, beauty, abundance, creativity.
- Jupiter, The Wheel of Fortune (X): expansion, luck, turning cycles.
- Mars, The Tower (XVI): sudden change, conflict, liberation.
- The Sun, The Sun (XIX): vitality, joy, clarity, success.
- Saturn, The World (XXI): completion, mastery, structure.
- Air, later Uranus, The Fool (0): fresh starts, freedom, the leap.
- Water, later Neptune, The Hanged Man (XII): surrender, a new perspective.
- Fire, later Pluto, Judgement (XX): awakening, reckoning, rebirth.
Here’s where it gets fun. Your sign’s ruling planet gives you a second personal card. A Libra, for instance, has Justice (XI) as a sign card plus The Empress (III) through Venus.
How Do the Four Tarot Suits Connect to the Elements?
Fire needs oxygen; water needs a shore
The Minor Arcana grounds tarot in everyday life, plus each suit belongs to one of the four classical elements astrology also uses.
Wands, fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): passion, stamina, drive, the electricity in your nervous system.
Swords, air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): the mind, ideas, logic, memories, communication.
Cups, water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): the depths plus fathoms of emotion, feelings without words, intuition.
Pentacles, earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): the body, home, money, tangible assets, practical choices.
Elements also interact. Fire plus air are compatible, because fire needs oxygen; passion without ideas burns out to embers. Water plus earth are compatible too. Fire beside water, or air beside earth, can feel hostile, a tension worth naming in a reading.
Every element you lack is a lesson waiting at the door.
What Are Decans, plus Why Do They Matter in Tarot?
The secret astrology printed on every numbered card
Here’s something most beginners never hear. Each zodiac sign spans 30 degrees of the sky, which ancient astronomers divided into three slices of 10 degrees called decans. Twelve signs times three slices gives you 36 decans.
The Golden Dawn assigned each decan to one of the 36 numbered Minor Arcana cards, Two through Ten in every suit, plus a planet to each. Suddenly the cards make a different kind of sense.

- Nine of Cups, Jupiter in Pisces: the wish card, ruled by the planet of luck in the sign of dreams.
- Six of Wands, Jupiter in Leo: the victory parade, expansion in the sign that loves applause.
- Three of Swords, Saturn in Libra: heartache as a sobering lesson in relationships.
- Two of Cups, Venus in Cancer: tender, mutual love in the sign of home.
- Five of Pentacles, Mercury in Taurus: worry about security, often a story the mind keeps telling.
- Ten of Swords, the Sun in Gemini: overthinking taken to its end, plus the dawn rising behind it.
Aces stand outside the decans as the pure root of each element. Court cards carry their own zodiac layer, which brings us to how I actually use all this.

How Do You Read Zodiac Signs in a Tarot Spread?
A trigger for intuition, never a fixed rule
You don’t need to memorize all of the above to use it. In my readings, the zodiac is a layer that switches on only when the cards ask for it.
The trigger is simple. When a Major Arcana card tied to a sign sits with a court card of that sign’s suit, I pay attention. Justice beside the Queen of Swords points me toward a supportive Libra. Temperance beside the Knight of Wands points toward Sagittarius. The cards don’t need to be touching; anywhere in the spread works.
Then I voice only my first impression. It might be a supportive person of that sign, the qualities of that sign for the season ahead, or the person I’m reading for. I don’t list every possibility, because the first impression is usually the right one.
The stars whisper. Your first impression is how you hear them.
My favourite place to practise this is a busy psychic fair, where you read for strangers back to back with no backstory. Above everything, trust your own intuition. The zodiac is just a layer.
Can Astrology Help With Tarot Timing?
Every sign is a season with a start plus finish line
Timing is the part of tarot most readers overlook, even though it’s what everyone wants to know. Astrology gives the cards a calendar.
When a sign card dominates a spread, it can point toward that sign’s season. The Chariot (VII) might suggest something moving forward during Cancer season, late June into July. Strength (VIII) could point to Leo season in late July plus August.
Numbers help too. I read them as the stage of the wait:

- Two: waiting on a decision.
- Three: first signs of movement.
- Four: a holding pattern.
- Five: a hiccup or delay.
- Six: moving smoothly.
- Seven: a slow patch.
- Eight: speeding up.
- Nine: almost there.
- Ten: the wait is over.
Treat all timing as foreshadowing, never a stopwatch. Your free will can always change the pace.
How Do Tarot plus Astrology Work Together in Love?
Compatibility is a conversation, not a contract
Love is where people most want the stars to give them certainty. Astrology can describe how two temperaments tend to meet. Tarot shows what’s actually unfolding between you right now.
A few pairings I watch for: the Two of Cups (Venus in Cancer) for mutual tenderness, The Lovers (VI) for a choice rooted in values, The Empress (III) for Venus at full bloom, plus a crowd of court cards, which usually means real people are involved.
One boundary matters here. I won’t use the zodiac, or any card, to pry into what someone else is thinking or feeling. Their free will belongs to them. A good love reading keeps the focus on you: your patterns, your needs, plus what you’re ready to receive.

The twelve house spread places one card in each astrological house, giving you a panoramic look at every area of life. It’s ideal for a birthday, a new year, or the start of your own sign’s season.

Say each house aloud as you place its card; naming the position solidifies it. Read the twelve as one connected story, then notice which suits plus elements dominate. That imbalance is often the headline.
