Haunted or Healing? How to Tell Who’s Really in Your Home

Is My House Haunted? A Psychic Medium’s Guide to Spiritual Energy at Home

Reading time: about 12 minutes.

A GUIDE FOR UNSETTLED HOMES

Most hauntings aren’t malicious. They’re memories waiting to be acknowledged.

How to recognize spirit in your home, tell love from something foreign, then bring the peace back.

Have you ever walked into a room and felt something shift? A heaviness in the air, a quiet pressure behind you, a sudden chill that made your heart beat faster?

As an evidential psychic medium, I’ve spent years helping people understand whether what they’re sensing is emotional residue, a spiritual presence, or the loving visit of someone they’ve lost.

What I’ve learned is that most hauntings aren’t malicious. They’re memories, energy left behind by emotion, waiting to be acknowledged.

In this guide, you’ll learn the real signs of spirit in a home, how to rule out everyday explanations first, why children should never join seances, how to tell a loved one from an unfamiliar presence, plus how to clear heavy energy with or without sage.

I’ll also share what happened in the haunted apartment I once lived in, including the 3 a.m. alarm that wouldn’t stop, plus what I discovered about that room the very next day. Read to the end.

Inside this guide

  • The real signs a spirit might be in your home
  • Everyday causes worth ruling out first
  • Whether spirits attach to people or places
  • Why children shouldn’t join ghost hunts or seances
  • Early signs of heavy energy (your plants know first)

What Are the Real Signs That a Spirit Might Be in Your Home?

The first sign might be an emotion that isn’t yoursWhen your decor includes haunted minimalist. Dim living room in blue moonlight with a subtle mist, illustrating the real signs a spirit might be in your home, from a psychic medium.

Spiritual energy rarely makes a dramatic entrance. It begins quietly: a scent that comes and goes without reason, a familiar sound in an empty room, flickering lights, an unexplained cold spot.

Your emotions might shift suddenly too. Sadness, nostalgia, anxiety, even comfort, rising from nowhere. That’s often the very first way spirit reaches out.

If you feel something in your home, remember that most spirits aren’t there to frighten you. They simply want to be acknowledged.

Rule out the everyday first

  • Carbon monoxide: CO exposure can cause headaches, dread, even the sense of a presence. Test your detector before anything else.
  • Wiring: flickering in one room can mean a loose connection. Have an electrician check it.
  • Low frequency sound: fans or pipes can create infrasound, linked to unease plus chills.
  • Night visitors: sleep paralysis often includes a figure in the room, especially in kids plus teens.

Once the practical is ruled out, what’s left is worth listening to.

Can Spirits Really Attach to People or Places?

When emotion settles, energy staysWhen your fridge shows more than your reflection. Woman staring at a flickering kitchen light with a faint ghostly reflection, illustrating whether spirits attach to people or places.

Yes, though rarely the way people imagine. A spirit can attach emotionally rather than physically, drawn to strong feeling. The old Stone Tape idea, that places can hold intense moments, touches on something similar.

My haunted apartment

I once lived in a haunted apartment that taught me more than any training ever could.

Lights switched on by themselves. Faucets ran in the night. Doors opened as though someone were replaying their life on a loop.

Then, one night at 3 a.m., my house alarm blared with no cause. It took forever to shut off.

The next day, I learned a previous tenant had died of an overdose in that very bedroom, the room I’d instinctively avoided since moving in. I’d always felt uneasy there.

After a year, I decided to reclaim it. I painted the walls, opened the windows, filled it with music plus light, poured my own vitality into the space.

The energy lifted, and the heaviness left.

That experience taught me energy lingers where emotion has been left unresolved. Good mediums don’t simply banish it; they help it move on. (That said, an effective banishing works too.)

Are Ghosts Dangerous for Kids? Why Children Shouldn’t Join Ghost Hunts or Seances

Some field trips come with an age limitSome field trips come with an age limit. Psychic medium raising a hand protectively toward a child in a candlelit haunted museum, illustrating why children shouldn't join seances.

I was once asked to lead a seance for a paranormal expedition. Among the guests was an eight year old girl. When her mother asked whether she could join, I said, absolutely not.

That boundary wasn’t about fear. It was protection. Children, plus plenty of adults, haven’t yet learned to regulate their emotions or protect their energy. When you don’t know your emotional limits, you can become a magnet for spiritual influence.

Darker energies don’t always present as evil. They can show up subtly: nightmares, mood swings, exhaustion, anxiety.

We never lose our demons; we simply learn to live above them.

Everyone has values as well as vices, and lower energies tempt us toward the easier path. Adults can usually tell the difference. Children often can’t.

What Are the First Signs of Negative Energy in a Home?

Your plants will tell you before your intuition doesWhen your plants start ghosting you. Wilting houseplants beside one thriving fern, illustrating the first signs of negative energy in a home, from a psychic medium.

I always surround myself with living greenery, because plants feel like an extension of our own life force.

When they thrive, it’s a good sign your home’s emotional atmosphere is balanced. If they wilt despite good care, something may be draining vitality. Stagnation, grief, tension can all weigh a space down.

Watch how your plants grow. They’re often first to show when something’s off, long before your intuition speaks up. Energy speaks through nature well before it speaks through noise.

How Can You Clear Negative Energy Without Sage?

Smoke helps, but love healsWhen in doubt, salt it out. Woman tossing salt into sunlight streaming through an open window, illustrating how to clear negative energy without sage, from a psychic medium.

Many people reach for white sage, and it can help. Smoke alone, though, won’t raise the feeling of a space. True cleansing comes from emotional energy: movement, music, intention.

When I lived in that haunted apartment, I played Buddhist chants throughout the day, setting a large piece of black tourmaline in the centre of the room. In my experience, tourmaline steadies heavy energy. Within days, the atmosphere softened.

A sage free home clearing in six steps

  1. Open every window. Let air plus daylight move through each room.
  2. Bring in sound. Play uplifting music or chanting. Laugh, sing, move.
  3. Use salt. Take a pinch, then blow it gently into the air with intention.
  4. Mist the room. Mix water, salt, a few drops of essential oil, plus a splash of alcohol to blend. Spray while picturing the space renewed.
  5. Anchor the room. Set a grounding stone like black tourmaline at its centre.
  6. Speak your intention. Say it aloud: “This is my home. Only love is welcome here.”

People love ritual, yet it’s the energy behind it that shifts reality. Cleanse from a place of love, and your home breathes again.

Haunted spaces aren’t evil. They’re mirrors, reflecting what needs healing.

How Do You Tell a Loved One in Spirit From a Wandering Entity?

Love feels familiar; fear feels foreignHallway goals: ten out of ten ambience, questionable roommate. Dim hallway with a faint translucent figure near a doorway, illustrating how to tell a loved one in spirit from a wandering entity.

A loved one’s energy feels calm, familiar, comforting. Their visits bring peace, warmth, or tears that feel cleansing. You might smell their perfume, hear a song that reminds you of them, or sense a soft presence nearby.

Unfamiliar entities feel inconsistent. They may drain your energy, disrupt sleep, or stir emotion without reason.

Loved one or entity?

  • A loved one: warmth, familiar scents, songs, peaceful tears, comfort.
  • An unfamiliar energy: drained energy, broken sleep, sudden irritability, dread.
  • A loved one: shows up gently, often when you need it most.
  • An unfamiliar energy: escalates when you’re afraid, quiets when you’re calm.

Spirit connected to love won’t cause chaos. When in doubt, ground yourself, set boundaries, then call in protection through prayer or intention. If you’re still unsure, an evidential medium can help you discern the difference.

Can Spirits Harm You?

Remember, you’re the one still breathing3 a.m., the original you up? Red digital alarm glowing in a dark apartment with mist near the doorway, illustrating whether spirits can harm you, from a psychic medium.

It’s uncommon, though heavy energy can influence mood plus wellbeing if fear goes unchecked. Spirits amplify emotion. If you fear them, that fear becomes their fuel.

Remember: you’re the one with life. You hold vitality, sovereignty, light. Anything trying to frighten you only wants attention. Stop reacting, and it loses its strength.

Grounding, cleansing, self awareness: those are your best defences.

How Can You Raise the Energy of Your Home After Loss or Fear?

Turn the light on, then let it leave on its ownHaunted? Past tense. Cozy home at sunrise with steaming tea, black tourmaline, a thriving plant, illustrating how to raise the energy of your home after loss or fear.

You can’t chase darkness out, but you can always turn the light on.

Healing a home begins with warmth. Bring life into it: plants, laughter, pets, colour, scent. Play the music you love. Speak words of gratitude aloud.

Write letters to your loved ones in spirit, then read them by candlelight.

Energy responds to love faster than it ever responds to fear.

Fill your environment with vitality, and grief transforms into presence while fear quietly dissolves.
